Private Investigator Going Public

Hi, my name it Terese Strickland and I’m a private investigator.  What?  People often want to know what you “do” for a living but when you say you’re a PI it brings a very mixed bag of responses.  For example, when I was a newly minted licensee I was seeking business advice  (name of organization and individual withheld to protect the innocent J).  I was told well, “I always think of that profession as kind of sleazy, like used car salesmen.”  My apologies as well to any used car sales people reading.  Other reactions range from the notion that wow, that’s so cool to the shock that little ole me (read normal looking mom) can do that.

Stay with me, I actually do have a point to this and for starting this blog.   That is that there are many misconceptions about what a private investigator does and who exactly can be a private investigator.  True, as with many professions, there are a few bad apples that live down to the stereotypes associated with this profession.  And the media, yes, I know, easy culprit, have portrayed PI’s in both a less than favorable light, think the bumbling idiot, or in unrealistic fashions, we all drive flashy cars (yeah, no one will notice the classic Mustang tailing them J, and break into places (sorry, we must follow the law), and we all are gun toting bad boys, you get the idea. 

So, my hope with this blog is to explain some of the different types of services that a private investigator can provide, what we can and cannot do, and hope that you come to see at least one private investigator in a more favourable light.
